Hello!
I’m Amy Makechnie, writer of fiction for young people: The Unforgettable Guinevere St. Clair, Ten Thousand Tries, and The McNifficents.
Welcome to my newsletter. Every Tuesday morning, I’ll send you something about writing or craft, a book recommendation, and other things that are totally “lit” (like gratitude, bc “the world is not just a little thrill”).
I’m a mother to four wonderful humans (and a very co-dependent miniature schnauzer), and for many years, taught high school students about the amazing human body. All of those hours with the heart and the brain while marveling over bones and muscles turned into an almost-true-fictional story about a girl and a strange neighbor and a mother and a family.
It took many many years to get that book published (I was a science major!), but now this is what I do: write stories about humans who have beating hearts and beautiful brains - which are incredibly resilient, and so very fragile. I LOVE my job (when I don’t hate it :).
The main characters in my books are most often kids because they are the most fun to observe and write - hilarious, kind, and heroic on the daily.
I also like to paint words or anatomically-correct hearts. If I’m brave, I will show you.
Thank you for subscribing. I hope Lit will inspire you to write your own stories, too.
